New website for dairy farmers

Eight websites have been combined into one to give dairy farmers a library of information available to them on cellphones.
Reading Time: 2 minutes

The move is designed to help farmers lift performance while they are on the go, DairyNZ brand marketing manager Andrew Fraser said.

“More than 60% of farmers now have smartphones and want technical farm information on the go – from their farm bikes, the tractor and in the dairy.

“This is one of the most comprehensive farming sites, which can now be instantly accessed and easily used on their phone.

“It covers everything from how to manage mastitis to getting employment contracts right for farm staff.”

DairyNZ’s latest survey indicated more than 30% of farmers used tablets and more than 20% of its site’s traffic came from mobile devices, reinforcing the need for a website that adjusted its layout to the screen size it was being viewed on.

“This is vital, as dairy farmers are adopting new technologies all the time and accessing information to make quick decisions on the farm.

“The website gives access to decades of research and tools which help find solutions or information for farm systems.”

The site, dairynz.co.nz, was one of the largest web consolidation projects in NZ in the last year when it attracted more than 395,000 visits and 1.7 million page views.

Some of the new site’s features are the calculators and filtering templates which have been built. This is illustrated in the Bull Search and the Cultivar Selector tools.

“Making these work for both large and small screens required a total redesign of how they were presented,” Fraser said.

Along with the improved look, a key change was the site’s navigation.

“The site hosts information across every category of dairy farming. This adds complexity. So the new navigation means finding content from your smartphone or office will be more logical and intuitive.”

The new dairynz.co.nz site will be featured at the National Fieldays at Mystery Creek on site PF16.
