Chairman John Wilson said the programme is designed to help those farmers wanting to become involved in rural leadership, and perhaps gain a place at the co-op’s board table, build their knowledge and governance experience.

“Developing world-class governance is a top board priority,” he said.

“Fonterra’s on-going strength relies heavily on farmers being able to move from the dairy to the boardroom. This programme is an important stepping stone to non-profit or business governance roles, which would provide the experience needed to become a successful candidate for a Fonterra directorship.”

“The programme requires dedication. There are high expectations and success demands a significant personal commitment. The benefits, however, are worth the effort.”

Established by the Fonterra Shareholders’ Council and board, the programme is now in its eighth year. Participants will gain a solid grounding in areas including leadership, governance versus representation and management, effective board practice, strategic planning and delivery, critical and reflective thinking, learning styles and Fonterra’s business and operations.

The programme runs for a year and includes residential courses, distance learning and coaching with content provided by Fonterra and Massey University. It is open to all Fonterra shareholders.
