Motel courses for farmers

Avatar photo
Retirement from active farming is a big decision facing many farmers as time creeps up on them and middle age starts to disappear.
Reading Time: < 1 minute

The desire for hard physical work and long hours is fading but they still want to keep working in their own business, although maybe at a slower pace and out of the weather.

Options have included a lifestyle block or a retirement village near the lake or the sea but offer very little to do for an active, retiring farming couple.

Motelling is a viable, income-earning option where a house comes with the business and you can live on the job with little influence from the weather. A husband and wife can work together but often take different responsibilities to operate the business and enjoy the pleasures of the travelling public, the clients.

The Hacienda Motor Lodge in Palmerston North is offering weekend, live-in motel management and business training courses this month.

The courses will help intending motel minders, lessees wanting to own the business and those thinking about owning the freehold going concern. Elwyn Violich has owned the Hacienda Motor Lodge since building it 25 years ago and has a wealth of motelling experience and knowledge to share.

The course will inspect two motels and includes accounting and real estate guest speakers. Violich also has a farm advisory/rural finance background which he says gives him a common link with farming people.
