Making farms safer

How to be safe on a dairy farm is more than about writing policies or a butt-covering or tick the box exercise, OnFarmSafety managing director Bronwyn Muir says.

“Farmers need assistance to ensure their practices keep themselves and their staff safe,” she says.

“And it’s about a lot more than having a folder of policies on a shelf in the milk room that no one reads.”

OnFarmSafety does onfarm audits anywhere in the country then works with owners and staff on a one-off or ongoing basis to improve farm safety.

“We don’t have a great record in New Zealand of farm safety and people need to start talking about ways to improve it,” Muir says.

The company was launched in April last year and already has clients throughout the country on dairy, drystock and arable farms.

“We can come on to a farm and do a full health and safety audit to establish how the farm and staff are doing and what needs to be improved,” Muir says.

“Our programmes are practical and cover all legislative requirements and we can come back as many times as we are needed.”

She says they aim to keep paperwork to a minimum for farmers and their staff and instead the ongoing support is hands-on with emphasis on making sure everyone knows what safety looks like and becomes involved in the risk management of the business.

“Farms are dangerous environments and we have to always think what we can do better, how we can make things safer so everyone goes home at the end of the day in one piece.”
