Majestic views and picket fences

Bush-clad mountains shouldering the Southern Alps are a majestic backdrop to the fertile flats of Harihari on the West Coast where a 154ha dairy farm is for sale at $3 million including Westland Milk Products’ shares.
Reading Time: 2 minutes

Stands of native bush dot the farm that produced 113,178kg milksolids last season from 280 cows, with only meal added into their diet through spring.

Shari McLaughlin from Farmlands Real Estate said the well-maintained property was run in conjunction with a runoff down the road that was available for lease to a new owner. The 45ha runoff has enabled the farm to have a closed herd and retain its Tb status of C10 for the past 20 years. Cows head to the runoff at the end of June and return to the farm as they calve.

It's a young herd that is available to buyers interested in the farm as a going concern, and will begin calving on August 10.

The farm flows over flat land with some humping and hollowing, with soils a mix of river silts and peat. The spring-fed La Fontaine creek flows through the farm and has three bridges already in place to tie in with the ring race leading from the dairy to paddocks. All the hard work throughout the farm has been done and resulted in a well-presented dairy unit, McLaughlin said.

"The owner has taken a lot of care, even down to the picket fence on the driveway. Everything is very well maintained and there's been ongoing regrassing on the property."

Contract milkers operate the farm without extra staff and feed out 50 tonnes of meal during spring through the dairy's meal-feeding system. Like the rest of the farm, the dairy has been well maintained and has automatic cup removers and teat sprayers for the 30-aside herringbone, with a 300-cow yard leading to it. A 15t feed silo and auger for the meal sits near the dairy.

Numerous buildings cater for the farm's needs including three two-bay barns, a three-bay barn with fertiliser bin, a workshop, an old calf shed and a standoff pad. Completing the picture is a three-bedroom sandstone brick home.

"It's a very scenic farm nestled on the Harihari flats. And as the crow flies it's not far to the sea and whitebaiting at the river mouth."

Harihari is a small rural settlement 70km south of Hokitika and 32km northeast of Franz Josef. The community has an area school with a roll close to 100 pupils.
