Large, fertile Coromandel farm

One of the largest sheep and cattle farms on the Coromandel Peninsula is for sale and has the contour and fertility to convert to dairying with room for the support unit as well.

The 371ha property near Hikuai, 9km from Tairua, sits in a sheltered valley that collects rain from the ranges to the north and west, enabling it to grow grass through the year, Andrew Fowler from PGG Wrightson Real Estate in Tauranga said.

“It’s got good scope with very good contour that would run a lot of dairy heifers or would make a beautiful dairy farm. Certainly it’s a very economic dairy support and grazing unit as it stands.”

About 120ha of the farm is low altitude and mowable, capable of growing maize and horticulture crops, with two-thirds of the farm on one side of the road and the remaining third providing a support block option on the other side.

To date, it has been grazing 520 dairy heifers that provide the bulk of its income, alongside 1000 ewes that achieve 150% lambing, plus 350 hoggets.

On steeper faces, 16.2ha is in radiata pine planted through the 90s and 5.5ha of acacia melanoxyn planted through the 80s.

“It’s a spectacular property with a dramatic mountain range in the background and it has been very efficiently farmed.

“The vendors have farmed it for about 35 years and it’s certainly weed-free and easy to manage.”

Native forest bounds large areas of the farm while the popular Pauanui Beach lies in the distance. Throughout the farm, extensive plantings of Chinese poplar provide ample shelter for stock as well as aesthetics.

Water from Stony Stream that runs through the farm is pumped to four large tanks before being gravity fed to troughs as well as the two houses.

Those two houses include a four-bedroom brick home built about 30 years ago and a two-bedroom farm cottage that was recently renovated. A wide array of farm buildings includes the woolshed, implement sheds and hay barns.

The farm will be sold by tender closing November 7, if not sold prior by private treaty.
