Keep calf pen bugs at bay

Calf rearers seeking a treatment to control bacteria and disease in rearing pens now have an alternative to the usual anti-bacterial approach.

Stalosan F is used in the pig and poultry sectors to control bacteria, fungi, ammonia, viruses, parasites and moisture in confined stocking environments.

Agrivantage managing director Warren Tanner says the proven track record in these sectors, means Stalosan F offers the same level of protection in closely stocked calf-rearing premises.

The antibacterial disinfectant has been sold in Europe for 50 years and is also now approved in the United States.

Stalosan F’s core ingredients are phosphates, clays, minerals and oils. Its composition remains inert once it comes into contact with animal bedding and dung.

Its minerals bind to the surface of bacteria, viruses and parasites, drying out their cells and ending their life cycle.

Stalosan F does not become deactivated when in contact with organic matter.

Stalosan F’s registration has claims for action against pathogens including E coli, pseudomonas, salmonella and staphylococcus, with no recorded bacterial resistance.

A typical treatment regime for calf rearers could be to spray the area with an anti-viral/disinfectant agent like Virkon, then apply a dusting of Stalosan F before introducing calves.

“Then it is a case of simply reapplying Stalosan about once a week at a rate of 50g a square metre, making it highly cost-effective.

“Someone rearing 300 calves would require about five bags throughout the whole season for an effective level of disease control.”
