With a nip of winter in the air, the market was more subdued at Kaikohe on Wednesday, Vaughan Vujcich from PGG Wrightson reported.

The cattle yarding was 550 head, and while quality types sold freely, lesser lines were harder going. Angus R2 steers met good demand and sold for $2.85-$2.90/kg, crossbred lines $2.65-$2.75/kg.

R2 heifer numbers were low and of mixed quality, with beef-cross making $2.60-$2.65/kg. Vetted empty Friesian and Friesian-cross earned $2-$2.30/kg, with good interest on the smaller outlay cattle.

In the R1 pens Angus, Charolais and beef-cross steers returned $3.40-$3.60/kg. Heifers of similar breeding were heavier and fetched $3-$3.20/kg. A large offering of R1 bulls were mainly good beef lines and achieved $3-$3.30/kg.

Cows continued to sell at solid levels. Vetted-in-calf beef and heavy Friesian realised $2-$2.18/kg, medium Friesian $1.80-$1.90/kg, lighter $1.60-$1.70/kg.
