Numbers were very low at Kaikohe on Wednesday following on from the Easter break. Empty boner cows were a highlight as demand lifted from buyers with surplus rough feed to eat, Vaughan Vujcich from PGG Wrightson reported.

Heavier Friesian and beef cows made $1.90-$1.95/kg, while mid-weight lines fetched $1.78-$1.85/kg, putting them above works value.

The rest of the offering was very small with a total of 320 yarded, and most were weaners. One pen of R2 Simmental-cross steers sold for $2.75/kg, while beef-cross heifers made $2.65/kg.

Weaner steers were mainly Hereford-cross, Hereford-Simmental or Hereford-Friesian and sold for $3.35-$3.85/kg, with demand high for the better Hereford-Friesian lines. Heifers were of similar breeding and sold well also at $2.70-$3.20/kg, while Friesian bulls made $2.85-$3.08/kg.
