Quality cattle were well sought after at Kaikohe on Wednesday, with R1 and R2 heifers in particular stand outs, Vaughan Vujcich from PGG Wrightson reported.

Numbers were moderate at 500 head, which included just a small offering of R2 steers. These were mainly Hereford-cross and beef-cross, and sold for $2.70-$2.80/kg. R2 bulls were also beef-cross and made $2.65-$2.75/kg.

R2 heifers raised eyebrows, with prices very strong as buyers looked to acquire quality older stock at the lower per-head prices. Plenty of quality meant buyers had to work to secure lines, and most were Angus, Angus-Hereford, Simmental-cross and Santa Gertrudis-Limousin-cross. Heavier lines, 420-450kg, returned $2.75-$2.85/kg, lighter $3-$3.05/kg. R1 heifers were of similar breeding and quality and also met strong demand, with 180-240kg making $3.10-$3.40/kg, while a line of 180kg Angus earned $666, $3.70/kg.

Cows sold on a firm market. Heavy beef cows and in-calf Friesian fetched $2-$2.10, medium $1.85-$1.94/kg, lighter Friesian $1.70-$1.74/kg.
