Good spring grass growth lifted demand at Kaikohe on Wednesday with cattle continuing to sell to strong demand, Vaughan Vujcich from PGG Wrightson reports.

Throughput numbers were moderate again with 350 head on the books, and finished steers and heifers were trading at $2.90-$2.95/kg.

Angus-cross and Angus-Friesian R2 steers in store condition sold for $2.85-$2.95/kg, while the heifer yarding was more mixed with most trading at $2.65-$2.75/kg. 

Dairy beef dominated the R1 pens, and steers sold to $3.30-$3.60/kg while bulls traded at $3.20/kg, and heifers $3.00-$3.10/kg.

A good yarding of autumn-born calves met strong demand with Hereford-Friesian and Angus-Friesian bulls selling to $540-$610, and heifers $460-$520.

Boner cow numbers were low and sold on a firm market, with heavy lines making $2.08-$2.15/kg.
