Kaikohe sale April 6

A bigger yarding of cattle at Kaikohe on Wednesday met good demand as grass continued to push prices along, though easing schedule prices were being watched closely.

R3 steers were mainly beef types which sold for $2.70-$2.75/kg, while Angus, Hereford-cross and exotic R2 steers fetched $2.80-$2.92/kg. Friesian and Friesian-cross lines sold well for what they were at $2.55- $2.70/kg.

R2 Hereford bulls sold for $2.88/kg, with Friesian lines making $2.70-$2.78/kg.

A nice line up of traditional and exotic heifers was well sought-after with the better lines making $2.80-$2.88/kg.

Weaners continued to sell well, though volumes were low. Hereford bulls earned $3.00-$3.06/kg, with crossbred and Friesian at $2.85-$2.95/kg.

Most of the heifers were good traditional and exotic lines, and sold for $2.60-$2.90/kg.

The sale finished with vetted-in-calf and empty dairy cows which sold well above works value. The better types made $1.80-$1.90/kg, with medium lines at $1.68-$1.74/kg, Jerseys $1.50-$1.58/kg.
