Kaikohe sale April 20

Sunny days following good rain over the weekend was just what was ordered, and meant strong prices continued at Kaikohe on Wednesday, Vaughan Vujcich from PGG Wrightson reported.

Numbers were moderate at 550 cattle, and demand was strong throughout the sale.

R2 beef-cross steers were mainly lighter types and sold for $2.65-$2.75/kg, with good quality Angus-Hereford up to $3.02/kg. Bulls of similar breeding earned $2.70-$2.90/kg, with Hereford-Friesian and Angus-cross heifers making $2.75-$2.85/kg.

In the weaner pens Simmental-cross and Hereford-cross steers fetched $3.20-$3.40/kg, while a small offering of heifers earned $2.80-$3.15/kg.

Friesian and Hereford-cross bulls made similar values at $2.80-$3.30/kg for heavier weights.

The cow market continued at very strong levels with heavy Friesian and beef lines making $1.90-$2.10/kg. Medium Friesian lines returned $1.80-$1.90/kg, boners $1.65-$1.70/kg.
