It’s that voting time of year again

Dairy farmers who have just posted their voting papers for the local body elections may feel that they’ve done their bit when it comes to making the choice of who can best represent them.
Reading Time: < 1 minute

But they have two more elections, more relevant to their industry, to go before the end of the year, for DairyNZ then Fonterra directors. Then there are two biggies to look forward to in 2014; the DairyNZ levy vote in June and following that, the general election.

The Dairy Exporter is here to help. On pages 48-50 we have profiles of the four contenders for two DairyNZ seats presented in alphabetical order. And in our November issue we’ll talk to the five candidates for election to the Fonterra board. While the field may be considerably smaller than those in recent years there’s still plenty of choice available and farmers are sure to have some probing questions at the candidate roadshow meetings in mid- November.

While the media is excluded from these gatherings we’ll be sure to have an ear on the issues that farmers are concerned about and likely to be bringing up at Fonterra’s annual meeting in the following month.

With the first of our special reports this month we tackle the subject of trading among farmers, which many Fonterra shareholders are still watching warily. With all indications the Government intends to push ahead with asset sales whatever the result of the upcoming referendum (yet another vote!!) investors will have an even larger range of options.

How that competition will affect Fonterra’s unit price remains to be seen but being the first out of the starting gates certainly seems to have paid dividends (pun intended).

PS On page 102 of the September issue the picture caption should have referred to an unchanged vaccination pattern for leptospirosis.
