Help-sheets for quake-hit farmers

The Canterbury earthquakes galvanised the irrigation sector into providing advice for irrigators with damaged equipment.

More than three years after the first big quake a handful of help-sheets have become a standard reference for farmers sizing up their shake response.

The material was meant initially to help farmers do the right thing by Environment Canterbury but irrigators in the Seddon area in Marlborough found it useful last year too, Irrigation New Zealand chief executive Andrew Curtis said.

Famers in the lower North Island should also be able to use it for advice on domestic and stockwater bore damage and trouble with pumping systems, as well as measuring water levels, he said.
