Gentle touch in the dairy

Rangiora-based Read Industrial has supplied the dairy industry with milking systems and irrigation equipment for more than 85 years.

The Read Slide Pulsator is simple and reliable and available in configurations suitable for both herringbone and rotary dairies. The pulsators can be flushed with wash water and are unaffected by temperature or vacuum variations.
Typically 20% of a herd will get mastitis each year and 25-50% of those are caused directly and indirectly by poor-performing pulsation, the company says. The cost per cow can be between $300 and $400 in drugs, with-holding, and lost production.
Nationally, between 50 and 100 dairies replace their pulsation systems each year, and between 30 and 40 of those replace electronic systems with slide pulsators.
The company says the slide pulsator is the most reliable pulsator available. It is virtually impossible to block, maintains a consistent performance, and has a gentle transition between phases due to air supply holes being slide-closed as opposed to suddenly being blocked by solenoid action. This action reduces teat end damage.
Read estimates the ongoing cost saving of slide pulsation over electronic pulsation at more than $18,000 a year on a 60-bail rotary dairy milking 800 cows.
The company supplies both herringbone and rotary milking systems to a range of designs and sizes to suit clients’ requirements. With a range of engineering capabilities, the company’s foundry casts in aluminium, brass, bronze, cast iron and stainless steel and has a CNC-equipped machine shop capable of providing a wide range of components.
