Frankton sales May 3, 4

There was a quiet start to May at Frankton with a small prime sale on Tuesday, and a moderate yarding of store cattle on Wednesday.

Prime steers were mainly plainer types and sold for $2.66-$2.69/kg, with heavier prime types selling on a steady market at $2.72-$2.75/kg. Three-year heifers met strong demand and earned $2.70-$2.71/kg, while other beef heifers fetched $2.62-$2.69/kg. Demand for cows picked up and South Devon traded at $1.89-$1.95/kg, with other lines making similar values. Boner Friesian made $1.52-$1.75/kg.

Prime lamb prices are picking up and the top cuts sold to $121, second and third cuts $97-$109. Store lamb prices were steady at $65-$87, ewes $37-$66.

Store cattle numbers were moderate. R2 steer prices were mostly steady for the better types. Angus-Friesian, Hereford cross and Hereford-Friesian sold for $2.86-$2.94/kg. Lines were all less than ten head in the R2 heifer section and some lines of dairy-cross sold well under $2/kg. Hereford-cross and Hereford-Friesian were the most consistent sellers, making $2.52-$2.63/kg.

Weaner numbers were low but standout lines included Hereford-Friesian steers, 182-205kg, at $705-$780, and a line of 40 Friesian bulls, 137kg, $535.

Friesian cows sold in two main cpk ranges, depending on quality and condition, with 569-647kg earning $1.86-$1.90/kg, 425-547kg $1.20-$1.76/kg.
