There was yet another lift in the yarding at the Frankton store cattle sale on Wednesday, which sold to a relatively steady market. As well, prime cattle made even returns on the previous week at Tuesday’s sale.

Steers of beef breed were consistently $2.83-$2.84/kg in the 543-643kg weight range. Angus-Friesian, 508kg, were a little weaker at $2.77/kg.

Beef and Hereford-Friesian heifers also sold at the same level as the previous sale at $2.73-$2.75/kg for 430-500kg.

However, there was far less interest in the dairy pens with most struggling to beat $2.30/kg.

Prime Friesian cows, 475-555kg, made a good return at $2.18-$2.19/kg, with a 20-25c/kg discount on lighter lines below 450kg.

There wasn’t much movement in the sheep side of the sale either.

Lighter and medium-grade prime lambs were at $87-$98, with the top lines reaching as high as $134.

There were a few SIL ewes also available. Mediums were at $88-$95 while good types fetched $100-$134.

It was younger cattle that made up the bulk of store cattle numbers.

Dairy-type R1 bulls were at $450-$565 for any below 170kg, although two lines of 110-120kg Hereford-Friesian sold at an impressive $630-$640.

R1 Angus heifers, 165-182kg, were popular at $640-$655. Traditional 200-240kg were $800-$840. R1 steers, 200-270kg, were $830-$880 across all breeds.

Hereford-Friesian R3 steers, 546-577kg, made $2.76-$2.79/kg while R2 steers of the same breed, 504-554kg, were at $2.76-$2.78/kg.

There were plenty of Hereford-Friesian R2 heifers available that went for $2.67-$2.79/kg across 366-439kg lines.
