Fonterra crisis: Political questions and answers

The recent Fonterra contamination scare has raised a number of issues, particularly around whether the level of government intervention was too much, too little or just right. It also generated some blunt criticism, notably from China’s state news agency, Xinhua, over New Zealand’s food safety regime and quality assurance.

They believed it showed a blinkered devotion to laissez-faire market ideology. The merger of NZ’s Food Safety Authority within the Ministry for Primary Industries, and whether it was adequately funded, was also raised.
