The Dunedin based company was established in 2007 by merging several like-minded businesses.

Healthy Soils believes pasture or crop production is determined by an interaction between the physical, chemical and biological properties of a soil.

Its focus is to provide information to help farmers understand what is happening in their soils and to think about the consequences of their farming practices.

Healthy Soils produces its range of liquid feeders based on whole fish hydrolysate.

The aim of the products is to feed and activate soil microbes, which in turn increase the rate of nutrient cycling, nitrogen fixation by clover, access to nutrient and biological control of insect pests and plant disease.

Other nutrients specific to farm needs can be added to the base fish product that is supplied directly through the leaf as a foliar spray.

To provide the correct balance of soil minerals it also supplies a range of “biology friendly” solid fertiliser and staff are highly trained to develop mixes which are specific to individual farms.

It takes pride that customers know exactly what components are in the blends and in what quantities.

The results of the liquid and solid programme have been rigorously trialled over four years and this work supports the claim the soil feeders increase the efficiency of solid fertiliser application.

The current product promotion gives farmers tools for effective, efficient nitrogen application for crops and pasture with all of the benefits of a soil feeder.

Foliar application allows the rate of nitrogen to be reduced with no drop in response, a very good option for the reduction of nitrogen inputs.

This is a particularly tough year for farmers with challenging weather and commodity prices. Healthy Soils understands the challenges farmers face and works closely with farmer clients to ensure it offers not only excellent products but also payments terms that assist rather than hinder.
