The traditional path through dairying is gradually evolving with many young farmers focusing on management rather than farm ownership. A workshop at this year’s DairyNZ Farmers’ Forum will showcase a project giving clarity to progression in the industry.

The Growing Good Farm Teams teams workshop is one of 12 taking place at the forum, being held at the Mystery Creek Events Centre, Hamilton on May 7-8.

Presented by DairyNZ people team leader Jane Muir, the workshop will focus on people, skills and the competencies needed in each career step.

“As an industry we’ve been working on establishing consistent guidelines for the skills and experience someone needs for farm roles, from farm assistant right through to operations manager or sharemilker,” she said.

The work had highlighted that all roles were very skilled and the industry needed to promote and celebrate that. For many people there were many possibilities other than farm ownership which could provide many of the same challenges and a consistent, highly competitive salary.

“To increase productivity onfarm we need the right people in the right roles. But getting the right people doesn’t usually happen by chance – it takes planning.”

The Farmers’ Forum is free to levy-paying dairy farmers and their staff. Registration is essential. Visit dairynz.co.nz/farmersforum.
