Fertile coastal farm

The coastal climate, fertile soils and cultivable contour of a 115-hectare north Canterbury farm has enabled it to be used as a dairy support unit to grow crops, graze young stock and winter cows.

Ribbonwood is 45km north of Amberley, where it is nestled among coastal hills and grows quality feed on its rolling contour.

Ruth Hodges from Colliers International says the farm has been run as a support block in conjunction with a Kaikoura dairy farm and is now for sale.

“It’s easy hill country and coastal so it has better rainfall and they’ve managed to grow good amounts of feed and, if anything, they’re under-stocked.

“It’s well set up for dairy support because you can cultivate the majority of the pastoral land and it has grown excellent kale crops for wintering cows. Also the area is known for growing good fodder beet crops.”

About 70ha is in productive pasture and about 40ha is planted in six-to-eight-year-old forestry, with a small amount of native bush in the gullies.

This autumn the farm has three paddocks of new grass sown and is carrying 30 cows with calves at foot plus 80 R1 heifers and has enough feed on hand to winter more dairy cows.

Going into winter it will have about 50,000kg DM of kale and 80,000kg DM of grass.

“That is impressive given the dry summer conditions other north Canterbury farms have had to deal with of late.”

Recent refencing has the farm split into 17 paddocks of mostly post and six-wire fences and regular amounts of fertiliser have been applied.

Water is sourced from the community scheme and is fully reticulated to troughs in most paddocks, with natural sources in others.

Among the array of farm buildings on Ribbonwood is a well-maintained, two-stand shearing shed with holding pens underneath, a three-bay implement shed and a two-bay hayshed with lean-to attached.

An expansive home spreads over two stories to include four bedrooms, two living areas, two bathrooms, a games room and a generous outdoor deck overlooking the manicured gardens to the farm beyond. A well-established orchard adds to its appeal and productive base.

Ribbonwood has a registered value of $1.18 million and is for sale by negotiation.
