Farming with a view

A diverse 248ha Canterbury farm for sale near Mt Somers with irrigation and good soils lends itself to any primary production operation. Located on Tramway Rd with a home that maximises views of Mt Somer and Mt Hutt, the farm has undergone substantial development.
Reading Time: 2 minutes

It has been carrying up to 500 R1 heifers, 500 R2 heifers that head back to dairy farms at the beginning of calving, and wintering 800-1000 dairy cows.

Up to 1000 winter trade Halfbred lambs arrive on the farm in late autumn and are shorn in August before being slaughtered at the end of September, averaging a 22kg carcaseweight.

To cater for this operation, new irrigators have been installed including a full centre pivot as well as a moveable pivot with four anchor points that together cover 175ha.

New fencing and a lane system have been put in place to ensure easy and effective stock movement throughout the farm.

The Barrhill Chertsey Irrigation scheme supplies reliable water to ensure the farm’s production as a finishing, arable and support block, enabling it to successfully and efficiently graze dairy stock on pasture and winter feed, finish lambs and grow cereal.

Mike Preston from Bayleys Real Estate in Ashburton said the combination of good soils and good water would enable production as well as options for a new owner.

“It’s a diverse farm and because of its irrigation and soils, it could lend itself to any primary production. Plus it’s well housed and is in a great location.”

The four-bedroom family homestead is well positioned in its established gardens to capture stunning views of the Southern Alps.

The original double garage has been converted to a studio and a new three-bay garage built recently.

A three-bedroom cottage on the farm can cater for staff.

A good standard of farm buildings and facilities encompasses a three-stand woolshed, three-bay haybarn, four-bay implement-workshop and granary, with four silos catering for grain and Te Pari cattleyards set-up with head bail, platform and scales.

The farm has a deadline sale of June 10.
