Farming and fishing

A boutique dairy farm in the Top of the South’s Rai Valley offers an enviable quality of life for first-farmers through to those semi-retired.

The 123 hectare farm is for sale by negotiation and sits within easy reach of Okiwi Bay; a fishing mecca on the edge of the Marlborough Sounds.

John Hollis from Harcourts in Nelson says the farm is making money from the 134 Ayrshire cows producing about 46,000kg milksolids (MS) and there’s potential to lift that to about 60,000kg MS.

“It’s a great little property, ideally located not far from Okiwi Bay, so if you get your work done, you can whip down with the boat to go fishing.

“It’s a dairy farm with a quality of life.

The owner has done a lot of work with his Ayrshire herd, which is available, and it’s a lovely herd.

“Production costs are pretty good and there’s still a bit of opportunity for development to lift production, so it’s got an upside.”

The herd is milked through a 14-aside herringbone dairy and the farm has ample support infrastructure, and two comfortable homes.

About 54ha of the farm is flat country, with another 57ha rolling and then 12ha of hills. Pastures, fencing and tracks to the 49 main paddocks throughout the farm are all in excellent condition.

The farm can be purchased as a going concern, including Fonterra shares, stock and replacements or variations ranging down to land and buildings only.

Its location puts it just one hour from Nelson or Blenheim and only 40 minutes from Tennyson Inlet.

It can be viewed at www.harcourts.co.nz or for more information contact Hollis on 03 548 3034 or 0274 388 031.
