Farm by the beach

Avatar photo
Take a sandy stretch of beach known as Dairy Beach and attach a Bay of Plenty dairy farm producing 100,000kg milksolids (MS) and you have the best of both worlds.
Reading Time: 2 minutes

Now for sale by tender, the farm is made up of 59 freehold hectares and 31 leasehold hectares beside Pukehina Beach in a sub-tropical microclimate that provides good grazing through summer and winter.

Andrew Fowler from PGG Wrightson in Tauranga said it was a trophy farm that was perfect as a one-person farm most of the year.

"The improvements are of a high standard, the pasture and fertility is strong and all this adds up to more time spent with family and fishing, plus money in the bank."

Flat to gently rolling contour is split into 61 paddocks with well-formed and maintained races and tracks. Two pumice pits on the farm provide the perfect material for filling around troughs, tracks, and gateways.

A mixture of silt loam and kaharoa ash sits on free-draining pumice and the soil stays warm through the year to produce strong winter and spring growth. Fowler said some of the lower-lying land held on well through summer, while the pumice areas provided good winter paddocks, adding up to a good, balanced mix of land.

About 280 cows were milked last season to produce 97,000kg MS, with 250 wintered on the farm. All young stock are grazed off the farm and Fowler said there was potential to graze the milking herd off during winter to increase production.

The herd is also offered for sale separately. Fowler said the young stock was from the famous Shalendy herd and was expected to be among the best and highest BI in the country.

A feedpad with troughs caters for 250 cows for maize and grass silage while in the 22-aside dairy there's a Buster Cover feed system with vibrator for feeding palm kernel and blends. Typically, the cows have been fed 1kg a cow at milking.

Two large barns are in tidy condition and used for rearing the annual crop of high BI calves. Completing the picture is a four-bedroom, two-living area home with a front lawn large enough for two sets of rugby posts and a junior cricket ground in summer.

Closing date for the tender is to be advised. For further information contact Fowler on 027 275 2244 or David McLaren on 027 223 3366.
