Everything falling his way

The timing for his win for Bay of Plenty Dairy Trainee could not have been better for Galatea-based Cameron Luxton, 24. He’d just relinquished the trophy from the award he collected last year, the Modern Apprentice of the Year award for the Rotorua region.

His earlier career working for three years as a builder, coupled with hard work out of hours studying, helped him stand out from this year’s trainee entrants. He is milking 380 cows on a farm owned by Andrew and Dianne Muller and is now in his third year on the property.

Their positive support made the transition to dairying a happy one for Cameron, and even more so now he has married their daughter, Susan.

“I had been offered the job by Andrew and Dianne, then happened to meet Susan at a 21st party, it was quite serendipitous.”

Cameron has bolstered his tertiary qualifications in dairying, building up credits for Primary ITO training levels.

He has almost completed his Level 4 training, and the positive training pathway is made more appealing for him by being able to ultimately complete the Primary ITO Diploma in Agribusiness Management.

He and Susan hope to contract milk and sharemilk on her family’s property as they build equity, also making the most of her off-farm income as an early childhood worker in nearby Murupara.

Second place went to Whakatane assistant Jodie Mexted and third was Andrew Cameron. The DPS Farming Knowledge Award was won by Josh Hedley from Whakatane, and the Bay of Plenty Regional Council Leadership Award and DairyNZ Practical Skills Award both went to Josh Cozens of Otakiri.
