Phil Goldsmith from PGG Wrightson says the combination of good soils, climate and easy contour creates numerous opportunities for the farm, which milks 300 cows for a four-year average of 112,750kg milksolids.

The milking platform makes up about 110ha and a 18ha leased block on its boundary goes with the property, enabling the farm to be a fully self-contained unit.

Young stock are often run behind the herd and some of the leased block can be used for the cows during the season so there’s also flexibility.

Production has been achieved on a mainly grass-based system with maize silage grown on the farm. Each year between nine and 10ha is sown in maize, with about 20 tonnes of drymatter a hectare harvested.

“It’s right on the town boundary and recognised as some of the best dirt in Opotiki with the ability to grow grass,” Goldsmith said.

About 30ha is suitable for horticulture like kiwifruit so it’s a farm with opportunities.

“If you wanted to be diversified you could put 20ha in kiwifruit and still have an economic small dairy unit.”

Facilities on the farm include a 24-bail Ardco rotary dairy and a concrete-base feed pad capable of holding 300 cows. Two homes complete the farm.

For a young family the farm has the appeal of a small rural primary school just a kilometre along the road.

“It’s one of those nice, wee rural schools that still have calf days and it’s within walking distance from the farm,” Goldsmith said.

Tenders are invited for the farm, closing April 9. It can be viewed at www.pggwre.co.nz. For more information contact Goldsmith on 07 307 1620 or 027 494 1844.
