Coalgate sale March 23

A change of sale day because of the Easter break meant reduced numbers at Coalgate on Wednesday, and limited demand.

Store lamb numbers were low and prices eased, with most making $57-$66, and a sizeable tail-end at $45-$49.

Prime sheep prices struggled despite very low numbers. Lambs mainly sold for $67-$98, while most ewes fetched $63-$70.

Dairy cows bucked the trend of falling numbers with 190 offered, and 90% sold between $1.21 and $1.34/kg, which was back on the last sale. A lighter offering of heifers managed to hold their values, regardless of the backlog at the processors. Prime types were in short supply and made $2.31-$2.48/kg for 500-585kg, while most were dairy types, with 398-466kg making $2.20-$2.35/kg. Boner heifers, 297-352kg, were down to $1.79-$1.84/kg. A small offering of steers sold on an easing market at $2.46-$2.59/kg.

There was little to speak of in a small store cattle sale, with quality mixed. A line of R2 Hereford-Friesian steers, 426kg, made $1105 at $2.59/kg, with their sisters making $1020 at $2.46/kg. Weaner Friesian bulls, 128-153kg, earned $360-$420.
