Low numbers in the cattle pens worked in vendors’ favour at Coalgate on Thursday, with prime prices in particular improving.
Reading Time: < 1 minute

Sheep numbers dropped across the board, although prime numbers were still high. Prime lamb prices eased $5 with most selling for $90-$119, and a small top end at $120-$127. A good mix of prime ewes saw top prices up to $91-$100, medium to good $61-$89. Two lines of run-with-ram breeding ewes sold for $70- $88.

Good quality, forward half-bred store lambs were well sought after, with most selling for $80-$97. Very few store lambs sold below this level.

In the prime steer pens $3/kg was achieved. Better yielding types, 455-555kg, earned $3.03-$3.04/kg, while the best of the heifers, 420-485kg, firmed to $2.90-$2.98/kg. Heavier heifers fetched more than $1600, $2.80-$2.88/kg. A larger offering of cows sold on a mainly steady market. Most were dairy lines, 438-493kg, which returned $1.73-$1.78/kg.

Store numbers were very low with Hereford-cross R1 bulls the main feature. They sold in four small lines for $310-$640. Four R2 steers did well at $1120, $3.03/kg.
