Encouraging high standards across the dairy industry is fundamental to the New Zealand economy and the competition is key to that, Blue Wing Honda brand manager Damien Smyth says.

Health and safety best practice regulations onfarm were also increasing and Honda was working to increase farmer education and awareness about operating vehicles safely.

“We do work hard to drive home that safety message and to be associated with a prestigious set of awards like the Dairy Industry Awards – it adds credibility to our message.”

Honda sponsors the national and the 11 regional Sharemilker-Equity Farmer of the Year Farm Safety and Health awards.

“There are so many areas contestants are judged on and it’s good that health and safety practice isn’t overlooked because it’s something you can get complacent about.”

Health and safety was always a hot topic with farmers and there had been a significant shift towards farmers buying side-by-side vehicles as well as having an ATV on the farm, he said.

“For farmers that do need to carry two people or a bigger load that might be a better option. With an aging farming population, the side-by-sides also offer more comfort and better weather protection.”

Farmers’ attitudes had improved vastly and helmet sales had also increased in the past few years.
