Milk product distributor A2 has made yet another earnings upgrade on the back of strong infant formula sales. With just a couple of weeks left in the year ending June 30 it now expected sales in the $350 million to $360m range and operating profit (Ebitda) at between $52m and $54m.

The company expected to have more than $50m of cash on hand at balance date, managing director Geoff Babidge said.

A2 had been developing markets in China, the United Kingdom and the United States, largely from its profitable Australia business.

The shares jumped 25c, nearly 16%, to $1.82 in early NZX trading after the announcement.

A2s flagship infant formula, A2 Platinum, was made by Synlait Milk in Canterbury.

The company had been evolving its infant formula marketing and distribution in China in response to regulatory changes there and was “alert and well placed to respond to other potential changes”, Babidge said.

A2’s revised forecast followed the February estimates of full-year sales of $335m to $350m and Ebitda of $45m to $49.

The latest sales figure was 23% higher than the mid-November forecast of $285m in sales and the Ebitda figure was a 136% jump on November’s $22m forecast.

In the June 2015 year A2 had sales of $155m and an Ebitda of just $4.8m.
