A great little unit

Secluded in its own private valley northeast of Dargaville lies a family-friendly, 83-hectare dairy farm with a good mix of fertile flats and easy hills.
Reading Time: 2 minutes

The vendors have made other plans and will leave behind a farm set up for easy management that produced 44,516kg milksolids (MS) last season from 154 cows and is estimated to reach 45,000kg MS this season.

Bayleys country property specialist John Barnett describes it as a “great little unit” with its mix of naturally fertile marine clay soils on the flats to the useful balance of easy-contoured hills.

Because of its high fertility, less fertiliser has been needed on these soils, with the Olsen P levels on the flats up to 68 and the hills 17 to 20. Optimum pH levels are recorded over the farm, along with good levels of calcium, magnesium and potassium.

An annual rainfall of 1500mm to 1800mm adds to growth and is spread evenly throughout the year.

Pastures over the farm are well-maintained and predominantly a mix of rye and clover, with some native grasses on the hills and only minimal kikuyu.

Most of the farm’s 62 paddocks are linked by a central race to the 12-aside herringbone dairy which has plenty of room for expansion. The dairy was built in 1980 and the vendor says it flows well which makes it a pleasure at milking.

Not far down the main race is a feed-standoff pad next to the silage pad. About 3ha of silage is grown on the farm to feed to the cows in autumn and spring, adding up to 77 tonnes last season.

An old, disused dairy has been converted to a four-pen calf shed that holds up to 50 calves, with cattle yards nearby and a springer pad within easy view of the house. A couple of haybarns and an implement shed round off the farm facilities.

The house is a comfortable, modern, four-bedroom home with a veranda and provides views to almost every point of the farm. Dargaville is a 15 minute-drive and Whangarei about 50 minutes.

The property is for sale by negotiation. For a virtual tour of the farm visit www.umoview.co.nz/13689. It can also be viewed at www.bayleys.co.nz/1812325. For further information contact Barnett on 0800 COUNTRY (268 6879) or 021 790 393.
