A fruity solution

A New Zealand company has launched a new product designed to keep fresh fruit and vegetables stored in household fridges fresher for longer.
Reading Time: < 1 minute

“This is a valuable tool for the rural sector considering the distance to the supermarket and the need to store fruit and vegetables for extended periods,” ExtraFresh manager Brent Rogers said.

ExtraFresh is a sachet that absorbs the ethylene gas naturally produced by fruit and vegetables as they ripen. The build-up of ethylene gas in enclosed spaces, such as the fridge vegetable drawer, speeds up the ripening process which makes produce spoil faster.

The granules inside each ExtraFresh sachet attract and absorb ethylene to purify the air. The sachet is made of moisture resistant cardboard and printed using vegetable-based inks.

Peeling the sticker on the front of the sachet activates the granules.

It can be used in vegetable crispers of fridges, chilly bins and other enclosed spaces where fresh produce is stored. It is also BioGro certified and safe to use with organic produce.

Rogers has been supplying cool stores, wholesalers and exporters with a commercial version of ExtraFresh for the past seven years.

“Slowing down the ripening process means vital nutrients are retained for longer, offering consumers an even healthier snack or meal.

“Better quality produce also means less spoilage and a decrease in the amount of produce thrown away each week by households so it’s a step in the right direction for the environment as well.

“It’s good for your health, good for your wallet and good for the environment,” Rogers said.

Packs cost $5 and last for 60 days.
