The new tool has been in development for almost two years and during that time a team of farmers has been involved in the design and testing phases.
Te Awamutu farmer Dave Swney says the Roster Builder has saved him time, and making changes, generating an updated roster and sharing it with the team is easy.
“The team now get the roster in more of a timely manner than they used to because it’s easier for me to do it – and it’s something I don’t mind doing now that it’s not such a manual process. It’s given me confidence to play with different options and consider where we could give more days off and the impact on the business.”
Shaun Kelly created a 12-month roster for one of his Canterbury farms in just a few minutes.
“I’ll get the other farm using the Roster Builder this afternoon – it’s the best thing DairyNZ have put out in a while,” he says.
The DairyNZ Roster Builder is levy-funded and available at no additional charge to levy-paying dairy farmers. Users are supported by videos, a roster wizard, quick reference guide and a comprehensive help facility online.
DairyNZ is keen to get user feedback and will be using that to ensure the resource continues to improve.

Early users of DairyNZ’s new online Roster Builder tool, released in late November, are finding they can indeed build a simple farm roster tailored for their farming business in less than five minutes.
