Thursday’s sale drew a yarding of 460 head, and while heifer prices eased, the market for steers in the medium and lighter ranges remained firm.

Prices for heavier steers decreased slightly on the previous sale. Some Angus steers, 605kg, made $2.71/kg, $1640, with another cut at 535kg earning $2.72/kg, $1460. A pen of 475kg whiteface steers sold at $2.90/kg, $1380, and another at 430kg fetched $3.05/kg, $1310.

The yearling section included some nice lines of black-whiteface steers, with good lots, 323-396kg, making $2.98-$3.44/kg, $1120-$1180. Weaner steers, 141-248kg, sold up to $5.10/kg, $720-$900. This year’s autumn-born weaner steers also made good money, with a 107kg whiteface pen fetching $610 and a 112kg pen $625.

The bull section featured a nice line of Hereford yearlings at 264kg, which made $3.44/kg, $910. Friesian bulls, 305-390kg, returned $2.88-$3.05/kg.

Wet weather might have affected the heifer market because prices for most classes eased by around 10c/kg. Good Angus heifers, 390-435kg, traded at $2.60-$2.79/kg and another cut at 338-390kg earned about $2.76/kg. The heaviest of the yearling heifers – a 285kg whiteface pen – made $3.02/kg and a nice line of Murray Greys, 237kg, fetched $3.10/kg. Off-colour heifers, 230kg, returned $600.

The sale drew a good bench of buyers, including some from the North Auckland and Bay of Plenty regions.

About 620 steers, heifers, cows and bulls were offered at Wednesday’s prime sale. Steer prices were back a shade on the previous week. The best heavy steers made $2.89/kg, with lots in the 650-750kg category averaging $2.84/kg. Steers in the 570-650kg range averaged $2.79/kg and 450-570kg lots averaged $2.73/kg.

Prime heifer prices eased by about 10c/kg. The heavier lots, 485-580kg, sold up to $2.77/kg, averaging $2.74/kg. Medium heifers, 420-485kg, averaged $2.70/kg, lighter lots $2.57/kg.

The best of the beef cows, 655kg, sold at $2.29/kg. Persistent rain brought boner cows out in bigger numbers and prices eased by 5-10c/kg. Heavy cows, 580-700kg, averaged $2.02/kg, medium boners $1.86/kg. Lighter cows averaged $1.60/kg.

Heavy bulls sold up to $3/kg, medium lots averaging $2.82/kg, lighter bulls $2.40/kg.

About 1300 ewes and lambs were presented at Monday’s sheep sale and the market remained on par with recent sales. Prime lambs traded at $96-$125, stores $45-$94, averaging $82. The best of the ewes fetched $78, lighter lots down to $28.
