Most southern areas are awash with grass, and plenty of buyers made the journey to both sales held at Temuka this week, to find stock to graze.

Demand for all classes of sheep was solid last Monday, though prime lamb prices were restricted by schedules. Store lamb numbers were moderate at 1700, and all bigger lines mixed sex. Top lines traded at $73-$79, with one heavy line up to $89. Medium lambs returned $72-$74 and a small light end, $63-$65.

Prime lambs sold on an adequate market with the majority making $80-$119. The ewe market was strong and most made $70-$109, with a small top end up to $133, while a small line of breeding 2ths earned $130.

Demand did not waver in the rostrum and fattening buyers joined the usual crowd. Steers were mainly Hereford-Friesian, and forward stores made $3.00-$3.12/kg, while the rest traded at $2.78-$2.88/kg. A small line of Angus, 506kg, managed $3.17/kg.

Ex-service bulls came out in force, with 250 offered. Angus-cross, Hereford and Charolais generally made $2.64-$2.74/kg, while a big offering of Jersey, 451-574kg, traded at $2.50-$2.63/kg, and Friesian, 436-531kg, $2.57-$2.60/kg.

Heifers and cows also came forward in moderate numbers, with 140 apiece. Angus heifers, 502-522kg, returned $2.88-$2.96/kg, and Hereford-Friesian, 492-579kg, $2.68-$2.78/kg. Friesian heifers mainly traded at $2.40-$2.54/kg. A clear distinction in the Friesian cows saw the top lines make $1.84-$1.93/kg, medium $1.70-$1.83/kg, and light, $1.63-$1.72/kg.

Store cattle numbers were moderate but the market was red hot, with demand strong from the first pen to the last. Steers made up the 2-year section and Angus, 400-470kg, made $3.13-$3.18/kg, and Friesian & Friesian-cross, 369-411kg, $2.82/kg.

In the 1-year pens a consignment of Hereford steers and heifers sold exceptionally well, with the top line of steers, 359kg, making $1280, and heifers, 289kg, $1100, at $3.81/kg. Angus-Hereford lines were small, but sold on a consistently strong market, and 319-347kg, made $1110-$1200, and 277-292kg, $910-$960. Hereford-Friesian, 304-385kg, sold for $930-$1195. Friesian bulls were the standout in the weaner pens, and again the market was very strong. Lines 105-117kg, sold for $450-$500, and 130-137kg, $500-$515.
