The Colyton farm has been used as a heifer grazing and beef finishing property in conjunction with a split-calving dairy farm in the Manawatu.

This past season it ran heifers year-round, with steers and heifers finished to sell before winter as well as 120 boner cows to fatten and sell through the winter. In June this year it carried 54 mixed-age dairy cows, 55 boner dairy cows, 40 R1 spring-born dairy heifers, 26 R1 autumn-born dairy heifers, plus a few bulls and R2 beef steers.

It usually produces about 250 round bales of hay and/or silage as well, with half fed on the property and the balance taken to the dairy farm. Last year the owners grew about 5ha of oats for winter feed and this has been sown in a Samson ryegrass and clover mix. More than 30ha of the property has been cultivated in the past.

Peter Barnett from NZR Real Estate said the owners have bought a larger farm and that creates an opportunity for someone to purchase a block of land near Feilding and Palmerston North that is not over-capitalised.

About 7ha of flats lie alongside the road on Marton loam which is a soil type used for intensive mixed cropping, livestock finishing, dairy support and some dairying in the lower Rangitikei. The balance of the property is Raumai sandy loam over the easy-to-rolling tops with some areas of steeper sidlings.

A central laneway connects the 20 paddocks to yards at the road as well as a small set of centrally-located drenching yards. A dam supplies stock water to tanks and then reticulated to troughs in the paddocks.

Tenders for the property close on November 2.
