Frankton sales September 20, 21

Store cattle continue to be drawn to auction by high prices at Frankton, and Wednesday was no different, with more than 700 offered.

Prime steer prices eased on Tuesday, with top lines earning $2.83-$2.85/kg, and the next cut, $2.69-$2.78/kg. Heifers were mainly local trade types at $2.74-$2.78/kg.

Prime lamb and ewe prices firmed with lambs trading at $98-$148, and ewes, $50-$90.

Store lambs sold on a steady market, with lighter lines earning $45-$74, and medium to good, $75-$95.

Hereford-cross and Hereford-Friesian were stand-outs in the 2-year steer pens on Wednesday, and prices were solid. They sold over a tight range of $2.93-$3.02/kg, with other lines not far off. Hereford-Friesian heifers fetched $2.83-$2.97/kg, a small line of Hereford $1160, $3.06/kg. Angus and Hereford bulls sold for $1400-$1500.

One-year cattle made up most of the yarding, and small lines of steers sold on firm market. The better beef-Friesian returned $880-965, lighter types $660-$850. Heifer pens were dominated by beef-Friesian lines and prices were very strong. Tops earned $860-$1015, lighter types $590-$750.

The strength continued in the bull pens. Angus-cross returned $910-$1045, Friesian $650-$970. Herefords were again the star performers, earning $1280-$1300, $3.77-$3.78/kg. The weaner and calf bull market was hot, with few lines selling at less than $550. Friesian, 195-208kg, made $745-$760, Hereford-Friesian, 93kg, $575, $6.18/kg.
