Frankton sales May 24, 25

Good consistent rain has meant little pressure for farmers to offload, and the main feature of sales at Frankton this week was the small lines of mixed quality cattle.

On Tuesday, prime steers were plainer types. Hereford-Friesian made $2.70/kg, Friesian $2.56/kg. Heifers fitted local trade requirements and sold for $2.66-$2.70/kg. Beef cows earned $2.06-$2.16/kg, dairy-cross lines $1.96-$2/kg, boners $1.58-$1.69/kg.

Beef bulls mainly fetched $2.66-$2.76/kg.

Prime lamb prices eased to $89-$117. Light to medium lambs sold on a firm market at $63-$75, tops $87. Ewe prices were steady at $48-$69.

A moderate yarding of store cattle on Wednesday was top heavy with small lines. The better R3 beef and beef-Friesian steers made $2.90-$2.96/kg, dairy and dairy-cross lines $2.60-$2.68/kg.

The action was in the R2 pens. A number of small quality lines of beef and beef-Friesian sold for $3.02-$3.09/kg, Hereford-cross $2.90-$2.96/kg. Good quality R2 heifers were well sought-after with small standout lines including Angus-Hereford and Hereford-Friesian at $2.99/kg, while the next cut mainly earned $2.78-$2.88/kg. Hereford-cross were of lesser quality and returned $2.65-$2.69/kg.

Weaner lines were very small with just the Friesian bulls having any lines of more than 10 head. These were very popular and sold for $495-$680. The best of the steers were Hereford-cross and made $740-$770. Most the heifers were beef-cross and fetched $530-$690.
