Feilding prime sale May 2

A large yarding of prime cattle, mainly cows, was offered at Feilding on Monday.

A northern buyer supported the cow sale which resulted in price lifts of 10-20cpk. Several lines were beef cows which largely fetched $2-$2.10/kg. Friesian cows, 484-622kg, sold for $1.81-$1.94/kg, lighter, 377-470kg, $1.71-$1.84/kg.

Only two steers were offered.

Good beef heifers sold for $2.60-$2.70/kg while the rest were lightweight dairy-cross.

Three big heavy Hereford bulls, 1090-1230kg, made $1.72-$1.83/kg two good Charolais bulls, 770-800kg, $2.73-$2.74/kg.

Calf numbers dropped back to 40 head as the season nears the end. Bulls sold to solid demand with good Friesians earning $300 and good Hereford-Friesian $300-$352. Hereford-Friesian heifers eased a little, with good types at $230-$270.

A larger yarding of prime lambs sold on a steady market. A good number were good heavy lambs and a much of the offering sold at more than $100. The top heavy males were bid up to $131, with other top male lines $116-$118.

Ewe entries more than doubled from last week but the market eased for the heavy and medium ewes. Heavy ewes fetched $74-$89, mediums $54-$70. Grazing ewes were generally steady at $40-$57.
