Sheep prices were steady at Coalgate on Thursday, while a bigger offering of dairy heifers and cows sold to solid demand.

Store lamb numbers dropped significantly, with just over 1000 on the books. Prices were mainly steady, with most trading at $70-$86, and a small, lighter end at $46-$69.

Prime lambs totalled 3000 and prices were very steady, despite the increase in number, with most selling for $90-$119, and a small top end at $120-$124. Prime ewes sold on a steady market with top lines earning $71-$85, mediums $50-$69, light $23-$46.

Dairy heifers and cows made up most of the prime cattle section, and prices for cows were mainly steady to firm. Heavy dairy cows made $1.51-$1.59/kg, medium $1.39-$1.48/kg, lighter $1.32-$1.41/kg. The best of the beef heifers earned $2.70-$2.82/kg, dairy-cross $2.14-$2.25/kg. The best of the steers fetched $2.74-$2.88/kg, top bulls $2.44-$2.56/kg.

Store numbers were very low with no lines of more than 10 head. Quality was mixed, but highlights included Angus-Hereford weaner steers $740-$760, $2.97-$3/kg. Four R2 Hereford bulls sold for $1280, $2.68/kg. Two R2 Angus steers returned $810, $2.42/kg, and the best of the heifers were Hereford-Friesian $990, $2.48/kg.
