Canterbury Park sale May 3

Prevailing dry conditions affected the sale at Canterbury Park on Tuesday. More prime cattle arrived in plainer, forward store condition, and a larger offering of store lambs made their way to sale.

The prime-only sale yarded about 219 cattle. Good condition prime steers sold for up to $2.81-$2.91/kg, though most earned $2.70-$2.80/kg. Plainer, forward store types with weight but not condition generally fetched $2.60-$2.70/kg.

Good prime heifers fetched up to $2.70/kg, though most were local trade and made $2.55-$2.65/kg. Forward store heifers earned $2.40-$2.55/kg.

Bulls, 480-700kg, sold for $2.50-$2.65/kg, while store types, 380-450kg, made $1.90-$2.40/kg. Heavy condition cows returned up to $1.82/kg, light to medium Friesian cows $1.40-$1.55/kg.

Store lamb numbers almost reached 2000 with the market generally steady, though the edge did come off a little. Most lambs traded for $65-85.

A reasonable number of prime lambs sold on par with the last sale. Heavy prime lambs made $106-$118, medium to good lambs $95-$103.

A small yarding of prime sheep met with similar demand to last week. Good prime ewes made $73-$84, medium $60-$73, lighter $40-$55.
