Bull breeders put best stock forward

This week we put the gumboots on and step out of the usual calendar sales to focus on the boys at the large number of yearling sire bulls being sold around the country.

Over the past few weeks North Island bull breeders have been putting their best forward and results to date are proving there is good support coming from studs, commercial and dairy corners.

These sales carry on for the next few weeks, with South Island studs also set to start soon.

Average prices are the best indicator of where budgets need to sit for those in the market and results to date show an improvement for all breeders, to varying degrees.

Also of note is that most have managed a full clearance of bulls offered. Given the time of year most of the bulls being sold are yearlings and average results for Hereford have most sitting at $2343-$3213 with Angus at $1776-$4107.

The Angus averages could do with a bit more explaining. While the range is much wider than the Hereford, most results sit at $2200-$3512.

The top of $4107 was posted by Sitz-Stokman Angus, Taupo, with eight of their 52 bulls bought by other studs with a top price of $12,000.

Top Hereford price to date is $10,000 for Newcastle Herefords, Hamilton, for a fantastic bull that tipped the scales at 626kg and was well fought over by neighbouring stud farmers.

These very high prices are well above expectations, with tops usually sitting around the $8000 mark, and have distorted some averages to a certain degree.

While much of the focus is on the one-year bulls there have been some older boys on offer around the traps.

Two-year Herefords have averaged $2650-$3475 to date with Angus $2525-$3000. Jersey bulls of this age have averaged $1975-$2325.

So, not a bad start to the yearling bull season and though the two record prices are not expected to be bettered, good results are certainly on the cards.

There are plenty more sales to go, however, with these not winding down until the end of October.
