Walk the BullWalk

Selecting the right bull for your beef breeding operation is essential for achieving greater genetic gain whether it is to improve your female herd or to target premium beef programmes. There are many new technologies in farming and researching information on the internet is now commonplace.

The same applies to buying bulls where many New Zealand cattle farmers are heading to BullWalk, the online video website to view bulls before the sales.

The concept arose from the demand Rural TV co-founders Sarah Perriam and Tony Glynn noticed from their 36-part television series, PGG Wrightson Stud Tour.

“Viewers of the programme told us repeatedly that they enjoyed seeing the livestock on the bull breeders properties on TV and it gave them an insight into what other options were available around the country for rams, stags and bulls,” Rural TV executive producer Perriam said.

BullWalk, the online way of viewing bulls before sale.

Entering into its third season of filming bulls around NZ before sale, BullWalk has doubled in three years from 300 bulls in 2013 to more than 600 bulls this year available on their website to view.

Each video showcases the various sides of the bull walking in the paddock with the bull’s breeding values and a running commentary.

“We also understand the ongoing debate around phenotype versus genotype when selecting bulls. We believe that they should go hand-in-hand in selection and so we display the whole bull complete with his figures on one website,” Perriam said.

BullWalk has also secured the live-streaming rights to the 2015 Beef Expo National Genetics Sale at Manfield Park on May 11-12 – see p124.

“We are excited by the support from the breed societies to get behind this new delivery of profiling NZ’s top bulls by filming the national sale bulls to view online prior to the sale and hosting the national sale live online which contributes to the exciting future for
the beef industry.”
