Tracking right with TracMap

A large Taranaki agricultural contracting business is finding GPS and cloud-based technology has virtually eliminated error from its day-to-day activities. Riverlea Contractors operate more than 16 tractors and trucks and two self-propelled harvesters. The company, owned by Mike and Charlie Silson, employs up to 21 staff in the peak season.

The business started working with TracMap two years ago and has now equipped all of its vehicles with TracMap GPS display units that link to cloud-based, task management and reporting system TracMap Online.

Charlie Silson said the potential for error when managing that many people and vehicles over multiple jobs – especially when operating night and day – was high but the visibility provided by the system was fantastic

“It eliminates the room for error. With the TracMap system in every vehicle we can guarantee that the guys are in the right paddock at the right time, doing the right job. The last thing we need is a paddock being cultivated when it needed to be treated.”

The Silsons were also saving time and improving data accuracy because information was instantly uploaded from vehicles. The accuracy ensured nothing was missed and invoicing was clear for both contractor and customer.

Mike Silson said an unanticipated bonus was the ability to live track, which allowed them to monitor and improve driver skills by reviewing jobs online and advising drivers of better ways to track a paddock.

“The assistance in training has been magic. It saves me so much time and means our customers are always getting quality services, even with seasonal staff changes.”

With the TracMap systems in place the Silsons could also help customers meet compliance requirements by tracking and reporting specific product placements – a feature which was increasingly valued by customers.
